A Muslim association recognised the achievements of a maths prodigy at a ceremony to mark the end of Ramadan.

At the Eid celebration at the ATC Hall in Wimbledon last Saturday organised by the British Muslim Association Merton (BMAM), mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina presented an achievement award to 16-year-old Shayan Masood Ahmed.

His achievements started at the age of seven when he became one of the youngest students to pass GCSE ICT at a grade B.

By the age of 10 he had passed AS Level in Computing and at 11 years old he beat 100,000 school entries to win the Primary School Maths challenge.

Shayan has qualified for the Maths Olympiad every year and at 15 he attended the invitation only maths summer camp at Oxford University.

It was the first time the association has recognised a young person in this way and it plans to make it an annual event.

TV presenter and journalist, Kristiane Backer was the guest speaker and she talked about her life as an MTV presenter before she converted to Islam, inspiring many young women with her book From MTV to Mecca, published in 2012.

The event was attended 190 people from across the community, including the leader of the council, Labour Councillor Stephen Alambritis and the leader of the Conservatives on the council, Councillor Oonagh Moulton.

Mr Alambritis congratulated association chairman, Fahim Akhtar, on its work and its plans to raise money for the Royal Marsden through a charity walk from Morden to Wimbledon Park next year.
