A 36-year-old man died from a head injury after falling in a street while drunk, an inquest heard.

Edward James Brender was walking down Pitcairn Road, Mitcham, at about 10pm on Thursday, July 3 when he fatally fell.

The unemployed, single man, of Island Road, Mitcham, had been drinking all day with a friend before he tumbled, the inquest heard on Tuesday.

The friend was walking ahead of him when he heard Mr Brender fall.

A resident across the road saw Mr Brender lying in the street and called an ambulance, reporting there had been an assault.

Paramedics found Mr Brender conscious and took him to St George's Hospital, Tooting where he was treated for five days.

He died on Sunday, July 20, as a result of his head injuries.

Police Constable Kelvin Jousiffe, reporting officer on the case, said there was no evidence to suggest Mr Brender had been assaulted.

Speaking at Westminster Coroner's Court, HM assistant coroner Russell Caller recorded a narrative verdict.

He said: "He in probability had been drinking during the course of the day which had caused him to be unsteady and for him to fall on the pavement causing the head injury."
