Leatherhead made it six wins and a draw from their last seven outings, as they came from behind to beat AFC Hornchurch 3-1 at Bridge Avenue on Tuesday.

Tanners got off to the worst possible start, conceding an early goal to the Urchins with less than four minutes on the clock.

Leatherhead’s defence failed to pick up Tobi Joseph, hovering on the edge of their six yard box.

With his back to goal the Hornchurch forward launched an overhead kick that bobbled past the despairing dive of Tanners keeper Louis Wells and into the corner of the net.

The Tanners players took time to settle on the heavy and uneven playing surface.

Kiernan Hughes-Mason had the visitors’ first clear attempt at goal after 21 minutes, but the Leatherhead striker’s shot was turned behind for a corner.

Tanners upped the tempo and their growing pressure paid off with an equaliser on 38 minutes.

Matt Smart launched a free kick high into the Urchins’ penalty area and Jerry Nnamani rose up to head past goalkeeper Sam Mott from close range.

Tanners boss Richard Brady made two changes to his side at the start of the second half, as Mark Nwokeji and Josh Gallagher made way for Carl Rook and Richard Avery.

Hornchurch missed a chance to restore their lead after 50 minutes when Joey May fired wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Moments later it was Leatherhead’s turn to miss a good opportunity. Hughes-Mason chased down a long ball forward, forcing Mott out of his penalty area to head clear.

The ball landed at Rook’s feet but he was unable to control it, firing wide from 30 yards.

Smart created another half-chance for the visitors after 64 minutes. Hornchurch failed to clear another Tanners attack and the ball fell in front of Smart 25 yards from goal.

Goalscorer: Vas Karagiannis now has 15 league goals to his name this season

The Leatherhead captain smacked the ball hard, his shot rattling the top of the cross bar.

Tanners were now making regular advances into Hornchurch’s half, and the visitors’ persistence paid off on 71 minutes after Vasileios Karagiannis was fouled on the edge of the Urchins’ penalty area.

Karagiannis looped a glorious free kick over the Hornchurch wall and beyond Mott’s flailing arms to find the top left-hand corner.

Tanners dominated the closing exchanges and added a third goal after 89 minutes.

Mott did well to block a goal-bound effort from Karagiannis, but the Hornchurch keeper was deceived by Adam Green’s subsequent corner, struck high and long to the far post.

Avery nodded the ball back between the sticks and the retreating Urchins’ captain Elliot Styles bundled it over the line for an unfortunate own-goal.

Tanners, 11th in the Ryman Premier Division table, return to action on Saturday when they entertain Canvey Island at Fetcham Grove. Kick-off is at 3pm.
